Basil Beef with Fried Egg is the real Thai comfort food. It reminds me of the old memories when I used to live in Bangkok Thailand. Me and my friends always walked to the local restaurants nearby for lunch during our college years. They’re all ‘hole in the wall’ type of restaurants, super cheap but delicious and satisfied hungry kids like us.
Thai Basil Beef is spicy, salty, a little sweet and real easy to make. I also love the sweet aroma of basil which is one of my most favorite herbs. Thai people usually eat this dish with jasmine rice, but today I decided to go with quinoa because of its nutrition. I also topped it with a fried egg, just like what they usually do in Thailand.
Let’s cook some food!
Start with the sauce. From left to right, sugar, Dark Sweet Soy Sauce, Golden Mountain Seasoning Sauce, Chinese chili paste, Fish Sauce and Oyster Sauce. My secret ingredient is the Chinese chili paste, it adds some smokiness to the dish.
Mix them in a small bowl.
Chop garlic and Thai chilies, then mix them together.
Make fried eggs, heat up the oil in a medium pan on medium-low heat. Crack the eggs into the pan, cook until the whites are set and the yolks are still runny. Remove them from the pan and set aside.
Crank up the heat to medium-high. No need to add more oil, there should be enough left from fried eggs in the pan.
Add the garlic and chili mixture, stir for about 20 seconds.
Add the beef, stir until it is cooked, 4-5 minutes.
Add the sauce mixture. Stir-fry for another few seconds, then add 1 tablespoon of water and the basil until it’s just wilted.
Turn the heat off. Serve the Basil Beef with Fried Egg with a side of Jasmine rice (or quinoa).

- 4 Thai fresh chilies (optional or use less)
- 2 teaspoons Golden Mountain Seasoning Sauce or light soy sauce

- 1 teaspoon Oyster Sauce
- 2 teaspoons Fish Sauce
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon Chinese chili paste
- 1 tablespoon water
- 1 cup torn basil leaves
- 4 eggs
- 2 tablespoons vegetable or canola oil
- Mix Golden Mountain Seasoning Sauce (or light soy sauce), sugar, Oyster Sauce, Dark Sweet Soy Sauce, Fish Sauce and Chinese chili paste in a small bowl.
- Chop garlic and chilies, then mix them together.
