Every year we celebrate the holidays with my hubby’s family and this year, I was tasked to bring a ham. YEAH! I was more excited than Christmas. It’s one of the easiest things on earth to make and always our family’s favorite. I usually make ham with pineapple slices, cloves and brown sugar glaze. Something about sweet and salty savory ham, it’s so good. However, despite of how great the pineapple glaze is, I’m changing it up this year. I’m making Orange Mango Chutney Glazed ham. I found this Baked Virginia Ham recipe from Ina Garten’s cook book, it has garlic, mango chutney, Dijon mustard, brown sugar, orange juice and orange zest. All of these combined, it creates a yummy wonderful sticky glaze on the ham.
The good thing about having a loving family is they can be your guinea pig. ha ha (Oh, and it’s a metaphor, not the actual one we ate in Ecuador last summer! And please don’t judge.) Turned out, they loved it and I promise my sister-in-law to post the recipe and send her the link, so here we are. 🙂
I’m using half of an apple wood smoked fully cooked ham (about 5 lbs.), I got it from Costco or you can get it from Amazon.com, use the link here, apple wood smoked fully cooked ham. If you use half ham like I did, it will take about half hour. We’re basically reheating the ham and adding the flavor to it with the glaze. If you use the whole ham, it will take longer, about 1 hour. Also, if your ham is a spiral-cut, that’s great. If not, score it first with a sharp knife into crisscross pattern, it will allows the glaze to get into the ham.
This yummy half Orange Mango Chutney Glazed Ham will serve about 8-10 people. The other best part… the leftovers. Here are a few recipes for you – slice it really thin for Ham and Turkey Pesto and Sun-dried Tomato Wraps or Truffle Egg Salad with Ham Tea Sandwiches. Dice to make Scrambled Eggs and Ham Crepes, Scrambled Eggs with Ham or Oven Omelet.
Let’s cook some food!
Preheat the oven to 350 °F.
Add garlic, mango chutney, Dijon mustard, brown sugar, orange zest and orange juice into the bowl of a food processor or blender.
Blend until combined.
Score the ham with a sharp knife into crisscross pattern (if the ham is not a spiral-cut). Pour half of the glaze over the ham, brush with a pastry brush to make sure it gets into all the nooks and crannies.
Bake for about 15 minutes, take out the ham and brush with the rest of the glaze. Put it back into the oven for another 15 minutes until the glaze is browned.
Serve hot or at room temperature. Enjoy!
